At Turning Point Middle School, one of the programs at our Parkway School site, Empowered Learning is the norm. 7th and 8th grade students from districts across CESA 1 are accustomed to being learners who own their learning, have a flexible voice and choice and are seen as resources in designing their experiences in all content areas. Fridays in this classroom are called "Future Fridays" with an emphasis on connecting learning to students' future career goals and directions. Teacher Stephanie O'Connor recently launched a three Friday interdisciplinary Cardboard Project during STEAM class. Base criteria was to create a purposeful, creative and innovative piece that was 95% or more of recycled paper based materials. Additionally, students were tasked with creating a fictional story that incorporated their creation and included the foundational elements of a story. Their presentations were judged by the principal, program coordinator, the DSA teacher and a student in the New Connections program. Projects included SEAL Team 6, a mini golf, an arcade and a foosball table. Principal Courtney Curry and Program Coordinator Janine Jungbluth are seen battling for the win on the foosball table!
